How do modifications effect auto insurance?

I heard that the “performance” modifications may cancel a policy of automobile insurance. True? If yes, what is considered a worthy mod void? I know that my coverage only replace the parts in stock. Also, I plan on following points: CAI, headers and exhaust, gearbox short breaks great programming ECU. When my shocks are due to be replaced I will probably take the opportunity to ride lower.
